Articles - Preventing Burglaries

Most home insurance policies will protect you against any losses due to theft. However, getting financial recompense does not make up for the trauma of suffering a burglary. If you can reduce the risk of theft to which you are exposed you will not only save yourself from the likelihood of experiencing such trauma, but also possibly save a significant amount on your home insurance.

The first thing that you should consider is the main entry points for any burglary. The great percentage of burglars come through the windows and you should, therefore, make sure that you have locks fitted to all accessible windows. Most insurance companies will expect locks of a certain standard and will give you a discount if you have such security features fitted.

Outside doors are another target and they should have locks that can only be opened with a key and of a type that a burglar cannot use a plastic card to open. Beware of nearby glass panels that a burglar can break and reach to open the door. Any door that opens from the inside should be fitted with additional bolts. Again the insurance company will have a certain level of locks that it expects, and a list of tradesman that it continues suitable to install any security features.

Remember that doors and windows are only as strong as the frame to which they are attached, so make sure that your door and window frames are solid and secure, and you may even find you can save on your insurance premiums if you replace or repair them.

Try not to make it obvious when you go on holiday, make sure that you cancel the milk and any newspapers that you have delivered and make sure that your neighbours keep an eye on your home. Timer switches are also a good idea as they may give the appearance that you are at home.

If you are considering getting an alarm system installed make sure that you check with your insurance company. Many home insurance companies will want you to use a company registered with the NACSS (National Approval Council for Security Systems), and they may be able to provide you with a local approved company.

You should remember, though, that whilst evidence of an alarm may keep someone from trying to break in, they will only inform you if someone does break in and it’s best to make sure that no one breaks in at all.

If you are thinking of getting a home insurance policy make sure that you do your research and get value for money. Co-operative Insurance are offering particularly good deals at the moment and should be worth consideration.
